Engine Diagnostics in San Antonio, TX

Check engine lights, rough idling, no-starts, hesitation and noises nobody can place. We test the system the fault code points at rather than replacing the part it names, so you pay to fix the problem once.

A Code Is a Clue, Not an Answer

When a warning light comes on, the vehicle stores a fault code. That code describes a condition the computer noticed — a reading outside the expected range, a circuit that did not respond, a cylinder that misfired. It does not name the broken part.

A code for a lean running condition is a good example. It can be a vacuum leak, a weak fuel pump, a clogged filter, a dirty mass airflow sensor, or an exhaust leak ahead of the oxygen sensor that is reporting the problem. Replacing that oxygen sensor fixes none of them. The sensor was telling the truth.

Engine diagnostics at our San Antonio shop means pulling every stored and pending code, reading the live data while the engine runs, road testing where the fault needs it, and then testing the specific component or circuit the evidence points at. We want the fault proven before we quote a repair.

Common Signs

When to Have It Diagnosed

  • Check Engine LightSteady usually means drive it in soon. Flashing means a misfire bad enough to damage the catalytic converter — stop driving.
  • Rough Idle or ShakingUneven running at a stop, or a vibration through the vehicle that smooths out as revs rise.
  • Hard Starting or No StartCranking longer than it used to, starting only when warm, or not starting at all.
  • Poor AccelerationHesitation when you press the pedal, struggling on inclines, or a general loss of power.
  • StallingCutting out at idle, at junctions, or when the air conditioning cycles on.
  • Fuel Economy DroppingA noticeable change with no change in how you drive. Something is running outside its normal range.

Every one of these has several possible causes. A rough idle alone could be ignition, fuel, a vacuum leak or compression — which is exactly why proper testing comes before any part is replaced.

The Process

What Diagnosis May Include

Depending on the vehicle and the symptom, diagnosis may include:

  • Full Module ScanStored, pending and history codes across every module, not just the engine controller.
  • Freeze-Frame ReviewThe conditions recorded at the moment the fault was logged — speed, load, temperature, fuel trim.
  • Live Data AnalysisSensor readings while the engine runs, which is where a sensor reporting nonsense separates itself from a sensor reporting bad news.
  • Road TestingMany faults only appear under load, at certain speeds, or once the engine is hot.
  • Component and Circuit TestingTesting the part or wiring the data implicates, rather than assuming the code named the culprit.
  • Mechanical ChecksCompression, vacuum, fuel delivery and ignition, where the symptom points that way.

Why Proper Diagnosis Matters

Parts-swapping is the most expensive way to fix a car. Each guess costs the price of the part plus the labour to fit it, and a wrong guess buys you nothing — the fault is still there, and you are no closer to knowing why.

It also makes the next diagnosis harder. Once three parts have been replaced, nobody knows which symptoms belong to the original fault and which were introduced along the way. Intermittent problems get considerably muddier.

Diagnosis costs money once. It is the difference between knowing what failed and hoping. If you have already had parts fitted elsewhere and the light came back, bring it in — we start from the vehicle rather than from somebody else’s conclusion, and we will tell you plainly whether the part that was fitted was ever the problem.

Where the diagnosis leads to work, it usually leads to engine repair, electrical repair or transmission work — all of which happen at the same shop.

Why Roy’s

Why Bring It Here

  • Diagnosis Through to RepairA full-service shop, so whatever the diagnosis finds gets fixed here — up to and including engine and transmission rebuilds.
  • Testing, Not GuessingThe code is where we start looking, not where we stop. You get told what was tested and what it showed.
  • Seven Days a WeekMonday to Friday 10am to 8pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am to 6pm.
  • Quote Before WorkOnce the fault is confirmed you get the cost in parts and labour before anything is done. Request a quote.

Questions

Engine Diagnostics FAQs

Why is my check engine light on?

It means the vehicle detected something outside its expected range and stored a code. That covers everything from a loose gas cap to a failing catalytic converter, so the light alone does not tell you how serious it is. Reading the code and testing what it points at is the only way to know.

Can you diagnose a check engine light?

Yes — that is a large part of what we do. We pull the codes, review the freeze-frame data, watch the live readings and test the circuit or component involved, then explain what we found before quoting anything.

Why does my car idle rough?

Common causes are ignition components, fuel delivery, a vacuum leak, carbon build-up or a compression problem — and they feel broadly similar from the driver’s seat. We would need to test the vehicle before saying which one yours is.

Why is my vehicle losing power?

Loss of power often traces to air or fuel restriction, a sensor reporting incorrectly, ignition problems, or something limiting the engine deliberately to protect itself. The live data usually narrows it quickly.

Can a diagnostic scan tell exactly what is wrong?

No, and any shop that says otherwise is overselling the tool. A scan tells you which codes are stored and what the sensors are reporting. Turning that into a diagnosis takes testing.

Is it safe to drive with the light on?

A steady light generally means you can drive it to the shop, though not indefinitely. A flashing light means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter — pull over and call (210) 763-1955.

Automotive Engine Diagnostics in San Antonio, TX

Roy’s Mobile Mechanic HQ is at 12650 TX-16, San Antonio, TX 78224, on the south side of the city. Diagnostics are carried out at the shop, because finding a fault properly needs the vehicle, the equipment and often a road test in the same place.

Because it is a full-service shop, diagnosis does not end with a report. Whatever the testing finds — a sensor, a wiring fault, a fuel delivery problem, internal engine work — is handled here. Open Monday to Friday 10am to 8pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 6pm.
