Oil and filter changes, fluid checks and scheduled servicing at our shop on TX-16. It is the least dramatic work we do and the most valuable — a good share of the expensive repairs that come through the door started as maintenance somebody put off.
What an Oil Change Actually Does
Engine oil does four jobs at once: it lubricates moving parts, carries heat away from them, holds contaminants in suspension, and helps seal the gap between piston rings and cylinder walls. It wears out doing all four. Additives deplete, the oil thickens with soot and fuel dilution, and it stops protecting the surfaces it is meant to protect.
San Antonio makes this harder than it sounds. Long stretches of heat, idling in traffic and short trips that never let the engine reach full operating temperature all age oil faster than highway miles do. A vehicle driven mostly around town is working its oil harder than the odometer suggests.
A service is also the one regular opportunity to look the vehicle over. Fluid levels, belts, hoses, filters and visible leaks are all easier to catch on a lift than from the driver’s seat. Small problems found here are usually inexpensive; the same problems found six months later often are not. A seeping valve cover gasket noticed early is a gasket. Ignored, it can become an engine repair.

When Your Vehicle Is Due
- Oil Life or Change ReminderThe vehicle has been tracking engine hours, temperature and load, and it has decided the oil is spent.
- Dark, Gritty Oil on the DipstickFresh oil is amber and slick. Oil that is black and feels gritty between your fingers has stopped doing its job.
- Oil Level DroppingNeeding to top up between services means it is either leaking or burning, and both are worth finding.
- Engine Noisier Than UsualA ticking or tapping that was not there before can mean oil is no longer reaching everything it should.
- Oil Light FlickeringEspecially on turns or at idle. Treat this as urgent rather than routine — low oil pressure damages an engine quickly.
- Burning Oil SmellUsually oil reaching a hot exhaust component through a leak. Worth tracing before it gets worse.
Any one of these can have more than one cause. Low oil and a ticking engine might mean a simple service, or a leak that needs tracing first. We check rather than assume.

What Maintenance May Include
Depending on the vehicle, the mileage and what we find, a maintenance visit may include:
- Oil and Filter ChangeDrain, replace the filter, refill with the grade and specification the manufacturer calls for.
- Fluid Level ChecksCoolant, brake, power steering, washer and transmission fluid where the vehicle allows it to be checked.
- Filter InspectionEngine air filter and cabin filter — both inexpensive, both commonly overlooked, both affect how the vehicle runs.
- Belts and HosesCracking, glazing, softness and swelling. Heat is hard on rubber, and this climate finds the weak ones.
- Visible Leak CheckOil, coolant, transmission and brake fluid. Knowing where a drip comes from is most of solving it.
- Tyre and Battery ConditionPressure, tread, uneven wear, and whether the battery and terminals look like they will survive the next hot spell.
Maintenance Is the Cheapest Repair You Will Ever Buy
A good share of the major work we do — engine repairs and rebuilds, transmission rebuilds, cooling failures — has a maintenance story behind it. Oil that went too long. A coolant leak nobody chased. Transmission fluid that cooked.
That is not a lecture, it is just what the work shows. An engine is a machine with a service schedule, and the schedule exists because the manufacturer knows what happens without it. Keeping to it roughly beats keeping to it never.
If something looks like it needs attention, we will say so and explain why. If it can wait, we will say that too. You should be able to tell the difference between advice and a sales pitch.

Oil Change & Maintenance FAQs
How often should I change my oil?
Follow the interval in your owner’s manual or the vehicle’s own oil-life monitor — modern engines and synthetic oils vary widely, so there is no single right number any more. Heat, short trips, idling and towing all shorten it. Mostly city driving in San Antonio argues for the shorter end of the range.
What happens if I wait too long?
Oil degrades and stops carrying heat and contaminants the way it should. Deposits build up, lubrication gets worse, and wear accelerates in places that are expensive to reach. Going over by a few hundred miles now and then is survivable; habitually doubling the interval is how engines get shortened.
How do I know which oil my vehicle needs?
The manual specifies both a viscosity grade and a standard the oil has to meet, and both matter — the wrong grade can affect oil pressure and, on some engines, timing components. Tell us the year, make, model and engine and we will use what the manufacturer calls for.
Can regular oil changes prevent engine problems?
They prevent a specific set of them — wear from poor lubrication, sludge, overheating of internal parts. They will not stop a component failing on its own. What they reliably do is stop small problems becoming the kind that need an engine rebuild.
Do I need synthetic oil?
Many engines now require it, and on those it is not optional. Where a vehicle can take either, synthetic generally handles heat better and lasts longer, which counts for something in this climate. We will tell you what your vehicle actually needs rather than upselling by default.
