Engine Repair & Rebuilding in San Antonio, TX
From gaskets and timing components through to full teardown and rebuilding. We establish what the engine actually needs before quoting, so you are not paying for a rebuild the vehicle did not require — or a repair that was never going to hold.
Repair or Rebuild Is the First Question
Engine work covers an enormous range. At one end is a leaking valve cover gasket or a failed sensor — a few hours of labour. At the other is an engine with a spun bearing that has to come out, come apart and go back together. The word “engine” in a quote can mean either, which is why the diagnosis matters more here than anywhere else.
Component-level repair covers engines whose internals are still sound: head gaskets, valve cover and oil pan gaskets, timing chains and belts, water pumps, thermostats, sensors, coils, injectors, and the damage that follows an overheat. A good share of this is maintenance that was left too long, and the repair buys years.
Rebuilding is what happens when the wear or damage is in the bottom end, the cylinders or the block itself — bearing knock, scored cylinder walls, low compression across several cylinders, oil consumption no gasket explains, or a cracked block. At that point a repair cannot hold, and we will say so rather than starting one.
Telling those apart takes testing, not a look under the hood. Compression and leak-down results, oil condition, what the codes and live data show, and what the engine sounds like under load all feed into it. See engine diagnostics for how that side works.

Common Signs
Signs of a Serious Engine Problem
- Knocking or TickingMetallic noise that rises and falls with engine speed. A deep knock under load is the one where continuing to drive decides the outcome.
- OverheatingTemperature climbing, steam, or coolant disappearing. Keep driving on it and a cooling fault becomes an engine fault.
- Blue or White SmokeBlue means oil is being burned. White that does not clear often means coolant is getting somewhere it should not.
- Oil Consumption or LeaksTopping up between services, spots on the driveway, a burning smell. Gaskets are a repair; running an engine low is not.
- Rough Running or MisfireShaking at a stop, stumbling under load, a flashing check engine light. Ignition, fuel or compression — testing separates them.
- Metal in the OilGlitter in the drain pan or on the filter means something inside is wearing away, and there is no external repair for that.
Several of these overlap. A misfire and a knock can both come from a handful of very different failures, and the difference between them is thousands of dollars — which is exactly why nothing gets replaced before it is tested.
The Work
What Engine Work May Include
Depending on the vehicle and what the inspection finds, the work may involve:
- Diagnosis and TestingCompression and leak-down testing, oil condition, codes and live data, and a road test where the fault needs one.
- Gasket and Seal RepairHead gaskets, valve covers, oil pans, timing covers and rear main seals.
- Timing ComponentsChains, belts, tensioners and guides — on many engines this is scheduled work, and skipping it ends badly.
- Cooling-Related RepairsWater pumps, thermostats and the damage an overheat leaves behind.
- Teardown and InspectionWhere internal damage is suspected, the engine comes out and is stripped so components can be measured against spec rather than guessed at.
- Engine RebuildingMachining where the block or heads need it, new bearings, rings, seals and gaskets, reassembled to specification and tested before the vehicle goes back.

Why Proper Diagnosis Matters
Engine work is the most expensive place to guess. Replacing a component because it is the one the code named, or because it is the easiest to reach, is how people end up paying twice — once for the part that was not the problem and again for the repair that was.
It runs the other way too. Being told an engine needs replacing when it needs a head gasket is just as costly, and it happens. Compression and leak-down testing is the difference between knowing and assuming, and it takes a fraction of what a rebuild costs.
Where a rebuild genuinely is the answer, nothing proceeds past teardown until you have seen the itemised quote. Parts, machining and labour, based on the engine’s actual condition rather than an estimate made before it came apart.
Keeping up with oil changes and maintenance is what prevents a fair share of this work in the first place.

Why Bring It Here
- Diagnostics Through to RebuildsThe same shop tests the engine, repairs it, and rebuilds it if that is what it needs. Nothing gets sent out mid-job.
- A Straight Answer on Repair vs RebuildYou get told which side of that line your engine is on and why, including when the honest answer is that the vehicle may not be worth it.

Questions
Engine Repair & Rebuild FAQs
Is it better to repair, replace or rebuild an engine?
It depends on what failed and on the rest of the vehicle. Gaskets, timing components, sensors and cooling parts are repairs. Internal wear usually means a rebuild or a replacement engine. A used engine is faster and often cheaper up front but its history is unknown; a rebuild is a known quantity. We will price the realistic options.
What causes engine knocking?
A metallic knock that tracks engine speed commonly points at rod or main bearings. There are also lighter ticking noises from valvetrain components or low oil, and a pinging under acceleration that relates to fuel or timing. They sound different and mean very different things, which is why it is worth having listened to rather than described over the phone.
Can overheating damage an engine?
Yes, and quickly. Heat warps cylinder heads, destroys head gaskets and can crack a block. An engine that has run hot enough to stall or steam has usually taken damage beyond the cooling part that caused it, which is worth inspecting before spending money on the cooling system alone.
How much does engine work cost?
There is no flat answer, and a number given before anyone has looked at the vehicle is a guess. It depends on the engine, what the diagnosis or teardown finds, the parts and machining required and the labour involved. You get the quote before work starts.
Is the work covered by a warranty?
Warranty options are listed on your receipt. Ask when you get the quote and we will go through what applies to your particular job.
